The image was shot at 1.85:1 as I was expecting a 2.35:1 image for this sort of movie, but it doesnвЂ™t deter the movie one bit. Of course it has to be, taking place in a haunted house and they just arenвЂ™t the same in borad daylight are they? Warner, as usual, has presented us with a beautiful picture which is anamorphically enhanced. Video: How does it look?ДЄ very, very dark movie. No foolinвЂ™ folks, I was on the edge of my seat! With that being said, I dare you to see this flick. Still, the movie is loaded with action, and for the first time in a long, long whileвЂ¦a movie actually scared me. Until the end, they are all convinced that itвЂ™s one of PriceвЂ™s elaborate pranks (and it might be). We start to see things happen, we learn that the house is indeed alive and weвЂ™re just wondering who makes it out alive and how. For some reason in movies like this, the stars always seem to split up and go check things out (part of what made вЂњScreamвЂќ so funny is that it made fun of just this).

The stained glass window shatters for no reason and metal plates have come down over the windows and doors, thereby making escape impossible. Things immediately start to happen, strange things. Rounding out the cast are Famke Jessen as PricesвЂ™ wife, Evelyn and SNL star, Chris Kattan who is the owner of the house and wants to get out with his money as fast as he can (he doesnвЂ™t, of course).

Sara Wolfe (Ali Larter of Varsity Blues) plays an Executive VP, Brigette Wilson plays a вЂњcelebrityвЂќ who just has to record everything and Peter Gallagher plays Dr. ItвЂ™s then that we meet the rest of the cast, led by Taye Diggs who plays Eddie, an ex-baseball player. If anyone doesnвЂ™t make it, the share is divided among those who do. The rules are simple, spend the night in the house and walk away with a million dollars. For his birthday, he invites a selected group of people to a вЂњHaunted HouseвЂќ. The man is a genius at making peole scared as hell. Anyhow, we find out that he is very dialobical and owns a string of amusement parks that make ordinary roller coasters and such look like childвЂ™s play. Maybe it was the accent, I dunnoвЂ¦he just had that look that James Woods has. Now, maybe itвЂ™s just me, but it took me a few minutes to convince myself that he was not James Woods. We meet Steven Price (Geoffrey Rush) almost immediately. And while IвЂ™m a fan of longer movies, sometimes itвЂ™s nice just to get right down to it. Right off the bat I liked this movie, it wasted no time getting to the action and introducing us to the main characters. Did it need to be remade after such a similar movie by the name of The Haunting came out only months before? Read on and find outвЂ¦

So here we have the вЂњoldвЂќ Vincent Price thriller, House on Haunted Hill. Whereas the characters are the same (mostly) and the story is the same, itвЂ™s usually just an updated version of an old movie (unless you have Hamlet which was remade twice in the 90вЂ™s aloneвЂ¦but thatвЂ™s an exception). Remakes, are in much of the same sense a вЂњsequalвЂќ. I think when people refer to the movie вЂњPsychoвЂќ they will be referring to HitchcockвЂ™s masterpiece and not Gus Van SantвЂ™s remake. Subtitles turn off.Remakes are rarely what their predecessors are. The German Blu-ray is UNCUT and runs at 93mins, Great HD picture and runs at the proper speed. The UK Cult Movie Collection version has no features and a transfer which is a disaster, probably the worst your ever seen, the frame rate is so bad and jerky you will have a headache after 2 chapters. Make sure you get the German FSK 16 Blu-ray version as it has a much better picture quality and it has many bonus features. The cast is great which also is a thing that makes it work, quite a few famous faces from other movies, some horror. Updated for a new generation with more lavish effects, a great horror even now after all these years, a good old school ghostly haunted house tale, plenty of great kills, some are bloody, the movie has some good effects for the time, a mix of practical and CGI for the spirit, but still looks cool. This is a classic late 90's horror, a remake of the 50's black and white movie. When Stephen and Evelyn become trapped with their guests, they quickly realize that the house really is haunted.

Stephen, accompanied by his bitter wife, Evelyn (Famke Janssen), offers a million dollars to anyone who can stay the whole night without dying.
